“Victory in Lights for Life campaign”

John Stanley said today:

“Last month I wrote once again to the Secretary of State for Transport, Ruth Kelly, on the need for lighting to be installed at Junction 3 of the M20 where it merges with the M26. I stressed that the Department for Transport’s consultants’ report had shown that this Junction has a serious injury accident record significantly above the national average, and one that had worsened in recent years.

I am delighted to say that we have now achieved victory in our Lights for Life campaign. Last week I received confirmation from the Highways Agency “that the lighting scheme has been successfully reviewed against competing priorities for funding and is programmed for construction within the 2008/09 financial year.”

This campaign has taken three years, innumerable letters to the Department for Transport and two meetings directly with Ministers. I am most grateful to all those who have contributed to the campaign including the local press.

I am particularly pleased that construction of the lighting scheme is going to take place in the next financial year beginning in April. I earnestly hope that this will lead to the elimination, or at least very considerable reduction, of serious injury accidents at Junction 3 of the M20.”
